Visitors strolling through our zen garden often stop to reflect on Eagle Ray — a stone sculpture of strength and grace. This work is by Brent Holley, a respected stone carver based on Rarotonga, whose practice is rooted in the region’s deep connection to land and sea.

Brent Holley's Sculpture At MOTU RarotongaBorn and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, Holley’s lineage spans Māori and wider Pacific ancestry, drawing inspiration from his roots and local life in Rarotonga.

Working often with volcanic basalt — known locally as Toka Māori — Holley transforms this raw, ancient form into a living expression of movement and spirit, that invites viewers to quietly reflect on life’s journey. Of his work, he says:

”These sculptures aren’t just objects; they’re touchstones for stillness. When you hold one, you’re holding a fragment of the island’s soul…and a quiet reminder that beauty emerges when we embrace the journey, not just the destination.”

Eagle Ray embodies this philosophy beautifully. Its sleek lines capture the fluid motion of the ocean, or perhaps of life itself, while its grounding presence reminds viewers of the strength and fortitude that life demands.

Next time you wander past Eagle Ray, take a moment to enjoy its calm, enduring presence, and its unique contemplation of the natural beauty of Rarotonga, and of how life’s journey shapes us all.
